SEO that holds up in 2026: the small number of things that matter

·7 min

Most SEO advice for 2026 is either panic about AI answers or the same technical checklist recycled since 2015. A calmer view of what a serious site actually needs to do.

SEO in 2026 is quieter than the industry makes it sound. Search engines and AI answer boxes both reward the same thing they always have: a site that clearly deserves to be the answer to a specific question, for a specific audience, and is technically clean enough to be read.

What has changed is the tolerance for filler#

AI answer boxes summarise thin content out of existence. A page that says nothing anyone else has not already said is no longer worth ranking. That is uncomfortable for content mills. It is very good news for anyone with a real point of view.

Six things tend to do most of the work on a serious site.

One. A clear, specific claim on every page. Not 'we are a leading provider', which the reader has already learned to ignore. A specific claim that a specific audience is actively looking for. If the page can be summarised in one sentence, and that sentence is worth reading, the page has already done more than most of its competitors.

Two. Titles and meta descriptions written for humans first. Under sixty characters for titles, under a hundred and sixty for descriptions, using the words the audience actually types. This is the last line of copy the reader sees before deciding whether to click. Treating it as an afterthought is a common, expensive mistake.

Three#

One clean H1 per page and a real content hierarchy underneath it. Semantic HTML, alt text on images, and no invisible text stuffed with keywords. Everything a search engine wants here is also what a screen reader wants, which is a useful accountability check.

Four. Structured data where it applies. Organisation, article, breadcrumb, FAQ, product where relevant. Not because it magically improves rank, but because it lets both search engines and AI systems understand the page without guessing.

Five. A canonical URL, a real sitemap, a sensible robots file and no accidental duplicate pages. Boring, foundational, occasionally forgotten during a rebuild, and responsible for more silent traffic losses than any algorithm change.

Six. Genuine speed and mobile behaviour. Not a lighthouse score chased for its own sake. Pages that load quickly on a real phone on a poor connection, and stay readable when they get there.

None of this is new#

That is the point. Serious SEO in 2026 rewards sites that have taken the boring things seriously and have a real point of view worth linking to. Everything else is noise.
